Best Practice Roster
HISCI created the HISCI Best Practice Roster as a template for GPOs to use when publishing their list of their member healthcare facilities to promote a consistent format with standardized data fields.
The HISCI Best Practice Roster was updated in June 2017 to include two new data fields (Primary GPO ID at Location and Primary Distributor) as well as recommendations for regular republishing of the full roster.

Prior to the creation of the HISCI Best Practice Roster, the format of lists of member healthcare facilities varied between GPOs, and basic data fields often had different names, increasing the potential for shipping errors and creating other inefficiencies for suppliers, manufacturers, and distributors when utilizing those lists.
The purpose of the HISCI Best Practice Roster is to provide a model template that all segments of the healthcare supply chain will use so to reduce the potential for errors and increase efficiencies in the transfer of data on healthcare facilities.
Using the HISCI Best Practice Roster
The HISCI Best Practice Roster is provided in the form of an Excel spreadsheet with two tabs. The “Best Practice Roster” tab provides standardized field names and definitions in rows 3-34. Rows 35-47 are optional.
The “Sample Add-Change-Delete Report” tab provides standardized fields and for the Add/Change/Delete Report, which is provided by the GPO separately. Standardized fields for the Add/Change/Delete Report are included with the HISCI Best Practice Roster on a separate tab.
Each GPO has the option to add additional field names after Row 34 on their individual rosters.
Each field name is specified as Required/Option/As Applicable.
A roster is a GPO's official list of current members (i.e., healthcare facilities) with data fields that track customer identification, delivery addresses of goods, and fields for shipping addresses as well. Before the creation of the HISCI Best Practice Roster, every GPO's roster was unique. Rostering is the process by which GPOs and suppliers organize and classify data elements to track that information.
In 2008, HISCI conducted research to identify areas of inefficiency within the healthcare supply chain. One of the biggest issues identified by suppliers at that time was the rostering system. Mistakes and confusion often arose due to the different types of rosters used in the industry as well as information requirements. The purpose of the HISCI Best Practice Roster is to provide a model template that all segments of the healthcare supply chain will use so that all parties are on the same page as customers are identified.
